Miter Flower Square

February 20, 2017 | Patterns

Start with flower section.

I used an I hook, but any size you want to use will just change the finished size of the square. Mine is roughly 10”.

Chain 3, sl st to first chain made to form a loop.

Round 1: Ch 1, 12 sc into circle. Sl to first sc. Fasten off if following this color sequence.

Round 2: Join next color in any sc. Make a beginning dc and count as first dc (or ch 2 and don’t count this as a stitch). 2 dc in each sc from previous row (24 dc). Fasten off.

Round 3: Join new color (white in my example) into any dc. *Pull up stitch to height you want, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull through, pull yarn up to same height. Continue yarning over and inserting over and over until you have 11 (or desired amount – more yarn overs, more puff, less yarn overs, less puff) loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops. Ch to close puff stitch, then ch 2. Skip next dc, and repeat from *. You should end up with 12 puff stitches. Fasten off.

Round 4: Join new color in space between any two puff stitches. Make beginning dc (or ch 3). 2 dc, 2 ch, 3dc – all into same space (beginning dc/ch 3 counts as first dc). Corner made. *3dc into each of the next 2 spaces. 3dc, ch2, 3dc into next space and repeat from * – 4 sides/4 corners, and 2 dc groups in between each corner. Fasten off.  Now start the “mitre” part.

Row 1: Join new color in corner space of previous row. Beginning dc (or ch 3). 2 dc into same space. 3dc into each space between clusters in previous row. At corner, 3dc, 2ch, 3dc. Continue making 3dc in between each cluster in previous row until you reach the next corner. 3dc. Make beginning dc (or 3ch). Turn. You should have 4 side clusters, 1 corner cluster, and 4 side clusters.

Row 2: Leave the single beginning dc or ch 3 alone and move to the first cluster space. 3dc into each space from previous row. When you reach the corner, 3dc, 2ch, 3dc, and continue to end space. After making the 3dc in the last space, make 1dc in the last stitch from previous row. If you are following my pattern sequence, fasten off color. Turn. You should have 1 beginning dc (or ch 3), 4 dc clusters, the corner 3dc, ch2, 3dc, 4 dc clusters again, and end with a dc into the last stitch.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until desired size/row sequence is worked. Mine has 10 total rows/rounds. Each first row will start and end with a 3dc cluster. Each 2nd row will end with one dc at the start and end. Each new group of 2 rows will add 1 more dc cluster as it gets bigger.

Border. Join yarn. Repeat the same 3dc in each space and 3dc, ch2, 3dc into corners, but continue around whole square rather than turning and going back and forth down two sides.
